Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) is planning to launch a bus service for the convenience of the tourists to visit the city.

The SCC mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury came up with the information recently.

He said: “A huge number of tourists come to Sylhet every day. Several walkways have already been constructed in the city for their convenience. The construction work of more walkways is underway.”

However, the details about bus fare or route could is yet to be revealed.

The construction work of Dhopadighi walkway, Upshahar walkway adjacent to Roseview, Jollarpar walkway has already been completed, said the mayor adding that the construction work of Goabari walkway and Baluchar walkway is almost completed.

Sagardighirpar walkway is under construction. Besides, plans have been taken to construct an aesthetic walkway around the field of MC College.

Mayor Ariful hopes that once these projects are implemented, city dwellers and tourists will be able to spend some time in the city.

Mayor said that tourists are often harassed when they come to Sylhet. They became hostages especially in the hands of some transport owners.

It is important to protect the tourism sector here for the sake of Sylhet. For that, SCC has planned to launch tourist buses for the convenience of tourists, he said.
During a recent visit in the city, it was found that a large number of city dwellers and tourists visit the city every day after inaugurating the Dhoapadighi walkway funded by the Indian government.

The SCC took the initiative for the beautification of Dhopadighi, which is located in the heart of the city. As part of this, a project titled “Beautification of Dhopadighi ” was implemented. Walkways have been constructed around the lake (dighi) under the project.

The boundary wall of Sylhet central jail-1 located on the western side of the lake and Osmani Shishu Udyan on the northern side.

According to sources, several business establishments had been built on the eastern side of this lake illegally after occupying the land. There was open space at the southern end. Besides, waste from businesses and houses were dumped into the lake on the eastern and southern sides which was the reason for water pollution of the lake.

Moreover, the water of the lake was filled with water hyacinth which turned the water color black. It spread an unpleasant odor. Due to these reasons, it was not possible to use lake’s water.

In this situation, the SCC took steps to renovate the lake. After the completion of the renovation work, the area now remains crowded with people from afternoon to night which has become one of the most beautiful tourist spots in Sylhet.
