Tourism banned again in Bandarban’s Thanchi

Bandarban district administration has re-imposed a ban on tourist movement in Thanchi upazila from 11 to 17 January, as a security measure amid the ongoing drive against extremists.

A public notice signed by Bandarban Deputy Commissioner Yeasmin Tibriji was issued in this regard on Monday.

With this, tourists are currently banned in three of the seven upazilas of Bandarban due to the anti-extremist drive.

On 17 October, the administration imposed an indefinite ban on tourism at Ruma and Rowangchhari, which remains in effect. However, the tourists will be able to travel freely in other upazilas of Bandarban, said the notice.

Earlier, the local administration lifted the restriction from Alikadam upazila and Thanchi upazila on 12 November and 16 November respectively.

From 10 October, law enforcement agencies started a joint drive against the underground extremists and criminals in Bandarban.

So far, seven extremists and three local suspected criminals were arrested with local arms from the forested hills of Bandarban and Rangamati during the operations.
